Adopt a Family for Christmas
Would you like to make Christmas special for a local family? There are so many families in our area that, through a varied combination of limited skills and education, low-paying jobs, medical problems, family and cultural challenges, poor choices and a myriad of other factors, find themselves struggling as we approach Christmas.
Through a partnership with an area school, we are able to match families willing to adopt a family with a family who is struggling this holiday season. These are families that are trying to make it, working multiple jobs in some cases, but whose life challenges make “succeeding” extremely difficult. These are not families playing the system during the holidays. These are families identified by the school as quietly struggling. The staff interviews all of the families to see if they would be willing to be adopted by friends from a local church for Christmas. As part of the arrangement the family cannot be receiving gifts through any other similar program.
We ask the families for lists of clothing sizes as well as gift ideas for each member of the family. The idea list is just that – ideas……there is no expectation to get every item. The lists often move us with their simplicity and make us chuckle with the limitless dreams of children.
The families range in size from three to eight, including adults and children. While we try for a variety of family sizes, sometimes the families are larger. In the past some people have teamed up with other family or friends to take on one of the larger families. Would you like to adopt one of these families for Christmas? Or perhaps team up with friends or relatives to provide Christmas for one of these families? If so, please contact Mike Westenberg at the parish center 435-6811, or email him at firstname.lastname@example.org
This weekend's connection: 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time
Here at St. Matthew we have added the Sunday Connection Scripture readings from Loyola Press to our website. The upcoming Sunday's readings are put into everyday English and broken down into school age groups to help children, adults, and families connect with one another. More
