Parables, Prophets and Letters In his homily Fr. Bob spoke how Jesus gave us his parables as letters to us, to speak deeply to us, to challenge us. As the Son of God, Jesus was a true prophet and so much more. Like all prophets, Jesus spoke God’s word to us – words of challenge, but also words of comfort. Jesus assures us we are important to God, he reassured us that we are safe in his father’s immense and eternal love – but he also challenges us to share that love with those around us, especially those in most need of hearing it.
Prophets speak words God wants spoken. You and I are called by Christ to be prophets. When we were baptized, we were baptized as prophets – to be God’s hands and voice in the world. That can sound very dramatic. But it is actually as simple as telling people and showing people they have worth……they have value……they are loved.
People can become disconnected and lonely in our society – especially during these times. People need to be reminded that they are loved……. that despite their feeling of being cut off, they are not forgotten. One group that really needs to hear that is our elderly - Especially the homebound.
One simple way we can do that – like Springsteen’s song……is to send them a letter – a note that says we care. Draw them a picture they can hang on their refrigerator or keep out on the table. A reminder that they are not forgotten – that God knows they are there – that we as part of their church community think of them and hold them in our prayers.
Thank you for sending them a letter as part of our session. Please continue to keep your homebound parish member in your family’s prayer.
Our other challenge of the evening was to write a letter to someone in our circle that needed to hear a message of encouragement and love. We gave you one stamped envelope to do that. Don’t feel limited by that one envelope. Perhaps each week you could send a note to someone, either as a family or individually. The world needs to hear a little love……..and you are God’s prophet. And remember, each letter means another link in your Holy Moments Chain!!
