St. John's Homeless Shelter

St. Matthew's will once again provide volunteers on Sunday evenings, November through April from 3:45 to 9:30p.m., for the St. John the Evangelist homeless program. Click on schedule to see 2012-2013 volunteer dates or use left hand column Forms on the home page of St. Matthew's Web-site. St. Johns plans on providing hospitality to the homeless from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 a.m. six days a week and from 4:00p.m. to 9:00 a.m.. Professional staff, lead volunteer and a security person will always be on-site. The intent of the program will be to provide a light meal, showers, laundry availablity and a safe place to sleep. The following are scheduled for a specific Sunday: Justice & Human Concerns, Grounds & Maintenance, SAC, Parish Council, Worship committee, Finance Council, Men's Club, JustFaith graduates, and St. Vincent DePaul. Parish members will be recruited for eleven of the Sundays on the schedule. Volunteer info is:
- Two people are needed for the 3:45to 7:00 time frame and one person from 7:00 to 9:30; however, two helpers are welcomed if people are more comfortable working in pairs. If someone wants to they can work both shifts from 3:45 to 9:30 p.m.
- All new volunteers need to fill out a volunteer application form that can be found under "volunteers" at ww.StJohnHomelessShelter.org/volunteer or under "Forms" on the left side of this web-site home page. They can also be picked up at the parish office. (If you filled the form out last year, everything is taken care off.) The form should be mailed directly to St. John's Homeless Shelter, PO Box 1743, Green Bay, Wi 54305. This form must be completed two weeks before you volunteer! Tasks and activities are simple enough that prior training is not necessary. There are paid staff members and a lead volunteer at the homeless shelter at all times. They will provide direction. Should someone be unable to make an evening to which they have committed, they or their committee need to find a substitute.
- St John's is at 411 St John Street. Entry to the facility is off of Jefferson through the back (north side) of the Gym. St. John and most of the surrounding streets are one way. It is suggested to take Monroe to Crooks, left on Crooks, two blocks to Jefferson; then left on Jefferson (one way). At about 150 ft the Gym building will be the last building on your left. Stop just before the building as entry is on the north side. Ring the doorbell and someone will let you in.
