January 19 GOF Note
Jan 22, 2018
Hope you have had a great week and have managed to keep everyone in the house healthy. Mine’s been super busy but it helps January go a little quicker, especially with no football playoff games to get invested in.
We had our first meeting with those families preparing for a first communion this week, met with our confirmation candidates and their sponsors, got things ready for our Sunday evening confirmation sessions with our high school juniors, and kicked things into high gear promoting our upcoming Alpha sessions.
This week is a Generations week! It’s hard to believe we only have two sessions left before we begin the season of Lent. Our February 7 Adult session will be our annual Mardis Gras evening, which means it is a “theology on tap” session. Plan on bringing some of your favorite beverage to share. Making it even more special, we’ll have a guest presenter. More on that later…….
Family Service Opportunity – Saturday January 27
I’m working with St. John’s Homeless Shelter on a service opportunity for us. Our plan will be to meet at the shelter at 10 am and be there about 2 hours. During that time we will take a tour of the facility and learn a little bit about the ministry there and how the space is used. After that we will have some work time –most likely various cleaning and organizing jobs ……..I hope many of you will be able to join us. Mark it on your calendar now. I’ll have a sign up sheet on Wednesday as we’ll need to know how many people to plan for.
We Need Your Plastic Shopping Bags
Yep, you know, those bags you never know what to do with once you are home with your groceries? We want them for a project! Please bring your bags of bags! Our middle schoolers will be working on a project repurposing the bags into sleeping mats that can be given out to homeless brothers and sisters or sent to areas like Haiti. The bags are woven together to make durable mats that give cushion and a bit of protection from the ground. Bring your bags with you to church or when you come on Wednesday. Thanks for your help with this project.
Did you Chalk your Door??
We blessed our Church home entryway last time we gathered. We also sent you home with chalk and the prayer guide. If you didn’t bless your home entry yet no worries – you can still do it! Dig up the supply bag and do it this weekend. When you do, please email me a pic. If it is easier to text the pic my cell is 920.360.4819 If your family isnt in the pic let me know who you are when you text me. We look forward to seeing your blessed homes! The chalk on my house is weathering well!
Sharing the Word with Family
During our adult session last time I spoke a bit about how you could use these three resources to initiate some conversation and focus on the Word in your families.
As a reminder, I talked about how we can use Fr. Bob’s homily to discuss the scripture by simply asking on the way home from church what our kids remembered from or thought about his homily. Once we start the conversation we can go back to the readings themselves and see how Fr. Bob’s homily drew from the readings and what other things we might see in those readings. The scriptures can be found in the At Home with the Word books you have. The Bringing Home the Word insert in the bulletin is also a way we can extend the conversation. There’s always at least part of it that is brief and pointed enough that we can encourage the readers of the family to read it aloud or individually and have a discussion about it. If nothing else we can find ways to incorporate the prayer from it that we read in church into the rest of our week at home – perhaps clip it out and put it up on the fridge or have someone read it as part of our meal prayer or evening prayer together.
All ways we can use the tools from mass to boost our family faith and incorporate the Bible in our lives. I’d like to hear on Wednesday if you gave this a try and how it worked!
Thank you to all those who scheduled themselves to be part of the work teams for the second semester. We’ll put out the list again through the next session and then I will volunteer some of those who remain unscheduled to help with some of our regular tasks. Here’s how the sign up looks so far. If you see a spot and a date you would like to claim please let me know.
