Guys and Dolls

We went to the East High School production of the musical Guys and Dolls last night. The time and effort it takes to put on a show like that is remarkable, and all of the young people involved (from pit, to backstage work, to the people in the spotlight) are to be commended! Excellent job!

As we watched, Wayne and I chuckled, cringed and flat out laughed at the image of marriage in the play. Some lyrics to ponder..."Marry the man today, and change his ways tomorrow."..."Give him your hand today, and show him the fist tomorrow."

The storyline of this 1950's musical was about how love is a gamble and you should avoid marriage for as long as you can, as if it were a disease. Sometimes I feel like our society has come a long way in it's view of marriage...and then the news flashes the 17 week marriage of a celebrity is coming to an end...and I'm back to wondering if we really have come that far....A new lyric for the above song could be, "Marry the man today, and you can always get divorced tomorrow."
