Today's gospel has many interesting elements - Jesus going to pray, storm coming up while the disciples were in the boat, Jesus walking on water and Peter trying to walk on water but then sinking as fear over takes him.
I found that the element of this gospel that touched my heart this week was the fact that after he entered the boat with Peter, the wind died down. Jesus's presence with the disciples had "calmed the storm".
As I was standing in the Packers Press Box Saturday evening and seeing the tremendous storm that forced the abrupt end to the football portion of Family Night Scrimmage, this gospel story came to mind. As we determined what were the appropriate actions to take to keep everyone of the 40,000+ visitors safe, the Packers management team needed to make decisions in a cool and calm manner. We were making decisions, communicating with fans in the concourse and ultimately returned for the fireworks show after an hour delay.
As I reflect on the gospel and the Family Night experience, I also realize that I have and will have the opportunity to be a calming presence with my wife and children in our marriage relationship. Listening, giving a hug, encouraging, supporting, reaching out our hand - these are my opportunities to be the calming, loving presence of Jesus.
We might not be "walking on water" but sharing the loving presence of Jesus with our loved ones can be just as miraculous!
