A New Authority...

In this week's gospel from Mark 1:21-28, Jesus is described "as one having authority, not as the scribes". Later in the gospel, it is said after Jesus speaks to the man with an unclean spirit, that this is "a new teaching with authority".  It is also stated that the "unclean spirit" knows who Jesus was - "the Holy One of God".

At first glance, you might say how does this relate to marriage and our relationship with our spouse.

Mark's gospel is making a contrast with the scribes (the writers/recorders of the scriptures) and Jesus' teaching.  I (Wayne) have said this many times in the workplace and home - it is not just what you do (scribes), it is how you do it that matters. I think that Jesus' new authority is really about the "how" (our attitude of service) we treat our spouses. Jesus also takes it to another level and calls the unclean spirit to be "Quiet, come out of him". Jesus is making this person clean not with the law but with action!

Think of ways this week where you can teach/treat your spouse with a loving attitude in simple actions of service.
